Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy launches a new augmented reality (RA) experience: Buffalo Rising

By now, you may already be familiar with augmented reality, also known as RA. Basically, an RA experience is like visually going back in time or into the future. The experience takes place on your smartphone. Once you’ve downloaded (and opened) an app, followed by registration / login, it’s as easy as training your phone screen to a predefined object and letting AV technology it will take you for a walk.

In the case of Conservancy, the RA experience takes place in Olmsted parks and walkways across the city. The technology is not only impressive (and available today), but the interaction with the subject is fascinating. For example, training your phone (via the Olmsted AR app) on a recently installed sign in, say, Front Park, here’s what you’ll see (from start to finish):

For those unfamiliar with the historic Lake View House (demolished), the interactive AR app allows you to see a virtual 3D model of the structure, exactly where it was located.

For the first time, visitors to this abandoned place “on the seafront” can now imagine – in great visual detail – what it must have been like to see this magnificent structure. Olmsted’s sign “comes to life,” as if it were a television or a computer screen, as the park’s backdrop remains the same, thus giving an insightful perspective.

The application can provide users with key information about park updates on service locations, events, closures, and alerts.

Additional path search information for each of the signs provides people with instructions on how to use the RA app, as well as site-related factoids.

This practical new application, called Olmsted 2.0 application, it can be used in numerous park sites and partial roads, allowing spectators to interact with the Olmsted Park system in ways they could never have imagined.

“Our parks and outdoor spaces are critically important for accessibility, now more than ever,” said Stephanie Crockatt, Executive Director, Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy. “As our community seeks refuge in Buffalo’s historic urban green spaces to exercise, meet family and friends and enjoy the benefits of being in the wild, the new Olmsted 2.0 app is the enhanced toolkit that users need to navigate through their access. learn more about how our Olmsted parks play a vital role in our day-to-day health and environmental well-being. ”

Designed by New Bird, the app is available on Android and Apple mobile devices. Market New York supported the redevelopment of applications through the I LOVE NY / New York State tourism division, as part of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, and M&T Bank.

“M&T understands the importance of our Olmsted park system to our community by providing access to a beautiful green space for all of Buffalo’s neighborhoods,” said Nancy Brock, vice president, program director, The M&T Charitable M&T Bank Foundation. “We are proud to support the launch of the Olmsted App 2.0 which will enhance the experience of all users of the park system by creating a more interactive and educational experience.”

“Exploring and discovering our Olmsted parks has never been so important to our health and well-being,” said Joel Feroleto, a member of the Delaware District Council. “Conservancy’s updated Olmsted 2.0 app is the tool we need to help us navigate, inform and educate. For example, the app’s new augmented reality feature will showcase the historic quarry garden of history Delaware Park and there will be improved park directions, signage and details to make our Olmsted park system accessible and friendly to patrons. “

“Here in Buffalo, we are lucky to have such a wonderful park system as Olmsted,” said David Rivera, a member of the Niagara District Council. “The launch of the Olmsted App 2.0 only increases the number of ways families and individuals can interact and enjoy these beautiful, historic green spaces.”
