Can virtual training really compete with live training?

Will telehealth visits plummet once the pandemic is over? Will industry conferences have the same attendance as before COVID-19 changed the game? Will HCP’s face-to-face engagement be what it was before?

While there is still a lot of uncertainty about what our return to post-pandemic normalcy will look like, we can count on one thing: virtual training is here to stay. Virtual learning has often been shown to be less effective than live training, but when done right, studies show it can be even more valuable. Here are four ways to build a virtual training program that matches the traditional classroom experience:

  1. Replicate real life.
    It may seem obvious, but think about it for a moment. When participants in medical device sales complete their training, what awaits them? People in a 3D world that require interaction and interaction; non-static images and Powerpoint-based conferencing. Effective training means simulating the real world experience. Live classroom training allows for physical simulation and spatial understanding. Today we can reproduce this experience in an online e-learning environment using interactive 3D images instead of 2D images and overwhelming slides. We can even build fully immersive virtual reality training experiences and assess knowledge using gamified interactive 3D questionnaires. Another way to replicate real life is to consider pattern interruption. In a classroom environment, you typically see a combination of learning modalities and learning styles: active and passive learning through a combination of lectures, observation, and hands-on labs. In the virtual environment, you can play pattern interruption to keep your students engaged including various modalities: directed by an instructor vs. asynchronous self-directed with a combination of text, video and interactive 3D. Adding an interactive knowledge check to maintain user participation is another key to replicating the live training experience.

  1. Make passive learning experiences more active.
    Even without the e-learning modality, creators of medical and scientific content face the challenge of keeping their audience engaged. Attention periods are short and today we have more information than ever competing for student attention. The lack of environmental control in a virtual learning construct adds additional pressure to create efficient learning experiences.

    Medical device students need a deep understanding of complex medical information quickly, which requires more active learning experiences. Although passive learning usually has low knowledge retention rates, hands-on learning helps learners to practice and incorporate new information into the brain. When students participate in their learning, they remember the information better. Interactive experiences capture their attention and make learning enjoyable, increasing the knowledge that adheres to them and making them safer in the field.

  1. Create synergies with live training.
    Live training can always play an important role in educating your team and your customers. The dual-purpose technology benefits both self-directed and instructor-led training. Use interactive and interactive 3D supports for pre-learning to provide and validate a basic level of proficiency prior to live training. When students show up to live training with the same knowledge, the experience of all attendees is more valuable and collaborative. The assets used in virtual training can be constantly harnessed by instructors in live training to reinforce key concepts and address problem areas. After live training, the same resources remain virtually available for students to update their knowledge and even use as a reference with clients.

  1. Get to know them where they are.
    Together, Generation Y and Generation Z make up nearly 50% of the American population; they will soon train most sales representatives and health professionals. Because a significant portion of your students have experienced little or no of their lives without interactive content, they are conditioned to expect rich learning experiences. By making your training accessible on demand to any device and providing an attractive virtual training program, at the same time, you improve student satisfaction and performance.

    Even before COVID-19 accelerated the digital transformation, trainers were dissatisfied with the status quo and recognized the need to use technology to evolve training in order to meet modern learners ’expectations and achieve improved outcomes. After the pandemic, the trend to use technology to innovate and evolve training will continue.
