San Francisco, July 4: Led by Facebook, global virtual reality (VR) headset shipments grew 52.4% (year-over-year) in the first quarter of 2021, according to a new IDC report.

The growing popularity of games, as well as fitness, has helped spread consumer awareness of virtual reality, while companies such as Facebook have made the technology more accessible, IDC said in a statement.
“Oculus has driven growth individually in the market, as the company managed to capture nearly two-thirds of global virtual reality headset shipments during the quarter,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research director at Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers d ‘IDC.
“While the company currently dominates the consumer segment, it faces competition in the commercial segment and its lack of presence in China leaves an opportunity for both local brands and brands that companies can cater to. “, added.
In addition to Oculus, Chinese companies DPVR and Pico also performed well during the quarter, finishing as second and third ranked companies and growing 108.6% and 44.7% (year-on-year), respectively.
HTC and Sony completed the top 5 VR headset companies.
Looking to the future, IDC predicts that VR headset shipments will grow by 28.9% (year-on-year) in 2021.
The long-term outlook remains fairly solid, as global shipments are expected to grow to 28.6 million in 2025 with a five-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.4%.
“As companies continue to plan for a future that includes a combination of face-to-face and remote work, we see virtual reality playing an increasingly important role in next-generation collaboration, training, and digital events.” said Tom Mainelli, vice president of the group’s president, IDC’s Device and Consumer Research.
