That rumored Horizon VR game is still alive, at least in the form of more rumors.
Speaking during a new episode of The XboxEra Podcast today, XboxEra co-founder Shpeshal “Nick Baker” Nick stated (via GamingBolt) that developer Firesprite is still working on a new Horizon VR game and will be releasing it for the next Generation of PlayStation VR Headphones on PlayStation 5.
Also, in terms of their trusted sources, neither Horizon Zero Dawn nor Horizon Forbidden West will receive a full virtual reality version. Firesprite will drive a spin-off that takes place in the Horizon universe itself, but that allows players to experience this wealth in virtual reality.
The only thing their sources did not convey is whether the rumored Horizon VR game will be “a complete game like Half-Life: Alyx or an experience like Batman: Arkham.”
It was shortly after the release of Horizon Zero Dawn on PlayStation 4 when rumors began circulating that Sony Interactive Entertainment was very interested in a derivation of virtual reality within the same universe.
Firesprite was believed to be leading this project as it began hiring almost at the same time for a “VR action adventure project adapted from one of the best-selling and most successful multimillion-dollar console IP titles of the last ten years.”
Obviously, everything is just a rumor and fans should be careful when raising any expectations. However, developer Guerrilla Games has often pointed out that the Horizon universe has great potential to tell so many more stories and share so many more experiences. If this takes the form of a Horizon VR game on next-generation PlayStation VR headphones, so will it.
Firesprite was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment as another first production PlayStation Studio. The acquisition further favors the flames that something is definitely happening in the Horizon universe.
