Greeley’s HD Escape Room offers the next level of fun for games for families, couples and singles

In recent years, the concept of escape rooms has grown in popularity, which has led game developers to be more creative in offering players a unique experience.

Escape rooms are immersive real-life adventure games, defined on specific themes. Players enter these rooms and have 60 minutes to solve puzzles, riddles and other codes in order to complete the mission and “escape” from the room.

Escape rooms have become popular team-building events, as well as recreational activities for dating nights, birthday and anniversary parties, and family reunions.

Most escape rooms usually have a lock and key game style where guests solve the clues to get a key that opens a drawer, a box, a chest, or other item with the next clue.

Still, Greeley’s HD Escape Rooms has pushed the concept of escape rooms to quite a few scales, offering players a technologically advanced style of play that reflects what you might see in the movies, which actually coincides with the company theme.

HD Escape Rooms, located on the ground floor at 810 9th St., Suite L100 in Greeley, was created by business partners Jeff Doan and Josh Holder. The company offers two themed escape rooms for players to challenge their mental skills and bend their mind, as well as a virtual reality game room that includes different virtual reality games for all ages.

HD Escape Rooms has both physical and electronic puzzles in its rooms, compared to lock-based accessories and keys that most escape rooms usually have.

“I’m a big fan of both because, from my experience in game rooms, especially something like that, it’s a great environment to have a key-based strut, but it’s also a lot more fun if you do something and something happens “, Free explained. “There are other in-room accessories that also activate other in-room accessories.”

All electronic puzzles are created and programmed by Doan and his team and each room has 8 to 10 puzzles that players can solve.

“A lot of them have a lot of work on the computer and I can tell them exactly what to do. We’re pretty technological, ”he said.“ You have to be very on top of everything because for it to develop and be a fun experience, everything has to work properly. ”

The accessories in the rooms were designed and created by Doan and his partner, and some were collected over the years.

“I tend to be kind of a hoarder to say the least,” Doan said laughing. “I find things and I’m like ‘I can use them one day.'”

An old wheelchair in the timeless room is an example of Doan’s findings. The chair is about 150 years old, but had suffered some damage, so it was not considered show quality or museum quality. However, the piece is perfect for the strange medical environment that Doan was looking for with the room.

Many props also include “Easter Eggs” that pay homage to movies and TV shows like “American Horror Story” or “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

“It’s kind of significant for us to be able to do that,” Doan said.

The company’s Out of Time room has a 70% success rate and is a time travel themed room where players are transported to the Greeley toilet. The game puts players against the clock to escape the sanatorium and retrieve travel plans in time before rival scientists take control of them and change the plot of the story.

“You’re interacting with the room, and as you build your plan, different sound effects will appear in the room,” Doan said. “When you complete the puzzle, the light and sirens will go out to notify our reception that you have successfully completed it.”

For those looking for an extreme challenge, the company’s Curse of the Coven room definitely offers a 30% success rate.

The room takes players on a historic trip to 1693, Salem, Massachusetts, where witchcraft was believed to be the cause of plagues, crop failures, and other tragedies. Now players must look for clues to their ancestors in the cemetery and the old Coven church to help your teams repair the damage done to the witches.

As in the Out of Time Room, the Curse of the Coven Room has amazing accessories and interactive puzzles that enhance the player experience and add to the escape room challenge.

“Our scarecrow scarecrow in the cemetery has a built-in speaker so the game master can interact with you from the front desk,” Doan said.

Escape rooms are ideal activities for families, couples or groups of friends and, depending on the level of maturity, children of all ages can take part. However, if you are a beginner in the escape room world, it can be overwhelming and daunting to try to maneuver through the process.

Some tips for first-time escape room guests include:

  • Do not do it; get to solve puzzles right away. An hour sounds like a long time, but the clock is constantly ticking.
  • Look for clues in the room. Remember that clues can be hidden anywhere or anything, so what you’ve discarded before might contain a big key to the puzzle.
  • Contact your partner or team members. If you find something, share it.
  • Don’t think too much about the puzzles. While the escape rooms are meant to challenge players, they are not meant to go unresolved.
  • If you and your team are trapped, don’t be afraid to ask the game master for help or suggestions. The game masters are there to help you accomplish the mission.
  • If you play with multiple players, make everyone stretch and work different things at the same time. Time is of the essence in escape rooms, so the more minds and hands you have working, the better.
  • Have fun and enjoy the process. Whether you complete the mission or not, it’s all experience.

Game masters are always on site to help players with tips and advice to complete the mission. HD Escape Room game masters spend 36 hours of training before releasing them to run the rooms on their own.

“We want to make sure that they are successful in these resets and that the gaming experience runs as it is intended to work,” Doan said.
