Teaching competitions with learning networks
This webinar will introduce educators to the nine competitions, as well as additional monthly and weekly challenges, that The Learning Network will conduct during the 2021-22 school year. Through writing, photography, podcast production and more, these contests offer students the opportunity to exercise their voice and choice and create works for an authentic audience.
In this webinar, our guest editors and speakers will give you an overview of our contests and guide you through the logistics of participating with your students. We will also share resources to prepare for the competitions and discuss how they fit into our free year-round curriculum. We hope you leave this webinar with inspiration to integrate these contests into your curriculum during the 2021-22 school year.

Use of visual media of the times to attract students
In addition to articles, The Times offers a rich collection of images (images, graphics, videos and virtual reality movies) accessible to students of all levels. Each school day, The Learning Network uses everything The Times has to offer to create new teaching resources that help educators bring the world into their classrooms.
In this webinar, the editors of The Learning Network discuss the following ways of using The Times ’visual media: discovering new perspectives and exploring the world through virtual reality mini-documentaries; to build literacy skills, promote discussion, and encourage creativity through our image suggestions; to activate critical thinking and practice data analysis by participating in the weekly “What’s on this chart?” discussions; and reinforce near-reading skills by joining our usual “What’s going on in this picture?” activity.
