You are a great Peaky Blinders fan? Well, remember in 2019 and you may remember that British virtual reality (VR) studio Maze Theory confirmed that it was working on a virtual reality connection experience, revealing shortly after it is said Peaky Blinders: The King’s Rescue. VRFocus recently sat down with one of the Maze Theory team to get a little more information and find out what else they’ve been doing, which involves the current VR fashion word … the metaverse.
Whether it’s a giant tech company like Facebook or Epic Games or a small independent studio when the word “metaverse” is mentioned, you can imagine a digital landscape designed to socialize, with own or multiple currencies based on cryptography and brands up to eye can see. Maze Theory CEO Ian Hambleton has the same passion for creating metaverses, but looks at it slightly differently, or more importantly, differently.
Having previously released him Doctor Who: The Edge of Time and with Peaky Blinders: The King’s Rescue in development, the IP addresses of big names and the fans who support them are key to this future metaverse. “Our focus has always been on well-known IPs and well-known fan universes. And that’s why, as a studio, we try to create meaningful “chapters” in the metavers, that’s what we want to do, ”says Hambleton.“ Peaky Land! ”Or whatever you want to call it, places that fans can gather around of IP and we believe they will be more successful because there is tradition and there are important fan bases that everyone wants to come together and experience. Star Wars things made by Oculus Studios would really fit into that. ”
What we don’t want to do as a company is like one VRChat, so we don’t try to create areas where people just get together and chat about anything; this does not interest us [in regards to] the metaverse. What interests us are the fan universes and the historical narratives. We will have multiplayer in our games, but within these multiplayer you will also experience AI-based NPC characters who tell the story, the players will do missions with each other and play a role ”. Indirectly confirming this Peaky Blinders it will have a multiplayer element, in the form that is yet to be revealed.
Like many in the industry, Hambleton acknowledges that this current trend toward a more digital society has been, in part, fueled by the pandemic: “What has been interesting in the last year, COVID and everyone working from home. .. what I would say is that people are more at home and they lack real world experiences, but they are not necessarily likely to go back to those real world experiences in the same way they did.And I think all these things that together they mean that the metaverse can be a way of existing, of being social and of being more together, and that the embodied Internet will be an experience of virtual reality ”.
I think the most crucial thing in virtual reality is what is said about the incarnate Internet, ”he continues. “The metaverse will exist in mobile and other aspects, but for us, as a study focused on virtual reality, the incarnate Internet experiences the metaverse in virtual reality.
To give this idea, Maze Theory is developing a core technology that will underpin all of its current and future projects: “We call it‘ Storyverse ’technology,” Hambleton explains. “Basically, we’re going to use tools and technology in all of our games and it’s starting to bring together a number of things that feel very relevant with all the conversations about the metaverse.”
It’s a mix of things that we see as really important in the future of virtual reality, like multiplayer and role-playing, but also even things like the emerging game, so one of the great things about Spicy is the amount of emerging gameplay that has been as successful in titles as it is Half-Life: Alyx and things like that. And it’s a mix of those three and being social, and allowing players to play together, it’s a very powerful mix. So, we have started to build these tools and this technology that underpins all our games Spicy come in.”
Peaky Blinders or Doctor Who, Maze Theory is definitely committed to a multiversal approach to this broad topic rather than a global space that others preach: “I think people like to simplify and following it will be a metaverse, but people have said it’s a a little silly. And I think people would like it to be embedded in a simple “oh insert in a place” and that’s all you do and maybe one day [it will]. For now, there will be many, such as the Oculus metaverse and all Oculus games, that talk to other games from other platforms. The metaverse will not only be VR, but there will be a lot of things that connect with each other, I just think the purest form will be in VR, ”Hambleton adds.
What, then, is that all this emerging, role-based, AI-based narrative technology has its own metaverse? “Gather everything that’s brilliant about virtual reality and games.”
