Taiwan’s creative content agency presents a selection of Taiwanese films through a virtual pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, which opened yesterday in France.
The online presentation features 30 local filmmakers, two independent directors and 65 works, according to the agency.
“The training shows the breadth and creative energy of Taiwan’s cultural content,” he said.
Born to be Human (Born and Human) by director Lily Ni (倪 耀) discusses gender identity issues, while Dead & Beautiful (詭 祭) by director David Verbeek is a vampire-type thriller, the agency said.
Listening to the director Yang Chih-lin (杨智麟) Before singing (Sings after listening to the song), an encouraging story about Aboriginal music and culture; the director of Yao Hung-i (宏 易) Health (我 心 我 行), a biopic about Taiwanese dancer Sheu Fang-yi (许芳宜); and the director of Chen Hung-i (陈宏 一) He loves you (Invisible Attack Program), a short film about a romance between a robot and a human being, is among the other featured films, the agency said.
Taiwanese works have performed well at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, according to the agency.
Samsara Ep. 1 (Reincarnation) of director Huang Hsin-chien (黄心健) i The abandoned deity (落難 神像) Director Kao Yi-chun (高逸 軍) are shortlisted for the VeeR Future Award for Best VR History and Best Interactive VR Experience, he said.
The two virtual reality (VR) projects face 14 more works for the two awards, he said.
Moneyboys (尋找), a co-production between Taiwan-based Flash Forward Entertainment and producers from Austria, Belgium and France, has reached the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, he said.
XiXi, a documentary by Wu Fan (吳 璠), competes for the Docs-in-Progress Award presented as part of the Marche du Film’s Cannes Docs program, he said.
For the Marche du Film’s Cannes XR program, the festival has partnered with NewImages Festival and Tribeca Film Festival to create XR3, a virtual exhibition showcasing the best RV creations, the agency said.
The partnership is “a clear indication of the importance of immersive content development around the world,” said Lee Ming-che (李明哲), executive director of the Taiwan Creative Content Agency.
“The agency understands this global trend and continues to provide assistance in immersive content creation, talent cultivation and international market development,” Lee said. “The consumption of movie and TV content is changing rapidly worldwide due to the [COVID-19] pandemic. “
