Earlier this year, Apple chief Tim Cook said he probably won’t be in the company in ten years. Cook has not yet set a date, but before leaving Apple wants to oversee the launch of a “new major product category” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The product in question could be Apple’s augmented reality glasses.
Gurman, in the latest issue of his “Power On” newsletter, talks about Cook’s future at Apple. Cook joined Apple in 2011 taking on the role of Steve Jobs as the company’s CEO. Since then, Cook has led Apple to become a trillion-dollar company, launched the first custom chip for Mac, and introduced new services. According to Gurman, Cook’s stay at Apple could be shorter than expected, as he apparently wants to be available for one more new product.
“The belief within Apple is that Cook just wants to stay with a new, more important product category, which is likely to be augmented reality glasses instead of a car, which is still beyond,” he wrote. Gurman. According to reports, Apple’s alleged augmented reality glasses called “Apple Glass” will debut during the middle of the decade. This is in line with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction of Apple Glass’s launch in 2025. This could be the next big product category Cook would like to witness before he leaves Apple’s CEO position. An autonomous car is also rumored, but Gurman suggests that the launch of this product will take even longer. Apple is also expected to launch mixed-reality headphones that have augmented reality and virtual reality. It is said that these mixed reality headphones will be released next year.
Gurman adds that given all of these factors, Cook will possibly retire sometime between 2025 and 2028. This speculation is based on what Cook says he might not be at Apple in ten years, the timeline of launch of the AR glasses and their age as well. .
