Health Scholars has launched Pediatric Emergency Care ™, a VR training application designed specifically for EMS providers and developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
In 2020 Health Scholars and AAP announced their partnership to leverage VR technology to deliver more engaging and impactful training opportunities. AAP and Health Scholars recognized a substantial gap in the preparation of SGA providers for pediatric emergencies. RV is an affordable and sustainable solution for educators and administrators facing ongoing budget problems and social distancing requirements due to the impact of Covid-19 and the new Delta variant.
Pediatric Emergency Care ™ for EMS is the only virtual reality training solution that allows EMS providers to view, assess, and care for various disease states, including breathing problems, respiratory failure, shock, and heart failure in a diverse set of pediatric patients. On-demand training causes providers to complete 4 different scenarios at home with a virtual EMS team. Each scenario is marked and provides a summary of the application. Vendors are asked to repeat scenarios until they reach an approved score that indicates competition. Jonathan Epstein MEMS, NRP, Director of Products and Strategy for Health Scholars, notes that “we know that recognizing serious illnesses in infants and children is a challenge, and that limited exposure to pediatric emergencies is met. Unless SGA providers practice frequently, the nuanced skills needed to effectively assess and treat children diminish over time, leading to significant preparation challenges.Current options are short, but RV provides organizations with a way to of scaling in an affordable way the training in standardized and immersive pediatric competences ”.
Pediatric Emergency Care ™ also includes innovative VR technology. Health Scholars is the only VR training provider that uses AI-enabled voice technology to replicate real-time interaction with the team and patient. Instead of traditional point-and-click activities, providers can realistically practice critical cognitive skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and decision-making.
“We expect providers to have a superhuman level 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with virtually hands-on training once a year,” explains Scott Johnson, CEO of Health Scholars. “Virtual reality training will completely transform training into the status quo, providing providers with the competence and confidence they need to deliver the best possible care. Pediatric Emergency Care ™ is just the beginning of this transformation and we are thrilled to have the support and experience of AAP. ”
“The AAP is delighted to collaborate with Health Scholars on such innovative and engaging in-service training solutions for EMS providers. The launch of the Pediatric Emergency Care application ™ fills the gaps observed with face-to-face training courses and enables quality, sustainable pediatric care through high-dose, low-frequency experiential learning, ”said Janna Patterson, MD, FAAP, Senior Vice President, AAPs, Global Health and Life Support.
Pediatric Emergency Care ™ for EMS is now available along with Pediatric Emergency Care ™. Health Scholars is also developing pediatric emergency care for the hospital setting.
