Updating MIPI specifications maximizes the energy efficiency of your device’s display through mobile, automotive, and gaming applications

At the same time, as the semiconductor industry responds to growing pressure to achieve greater energy efficiency without sacrificing performance, device screens can also be consumers of hungry energy.

A recently updated MIPI Alliance standard (MIPI means mobile industry processor interface) could help manufacturers address these challenges.

The group, an international organization that develops interface specifications for mobile and mobile-influenced industries, today announced the next generation of its already implemented MIPI Display Serial Interface 2 (MIPI DSI-2) specification.

MIPI DSI-2 specifies the high bandwidth link between the host processors and the device screens. The new MIPI DSI-2 v2.0 specification will significantly increase power savings while improving bandwidth and end-user experience across a wide range of applications in the mobile, automotive and games, said MIPI Alliance.

In terms of bandwidth, the v2.0 specification can help double the bandwidth over the previous version of the standard when used in combination with the latest versions of MIPI C-physical interfaces. and D-PHY, the alliance said. For automotive applications, DSI-2 is a core component of MIPI’s Automotive SerDes (MASS) solutions, a standardized connectivity framework based on the SerDes MIPI A-PHY specification for the integration of cameras, sensors and displays .

MIPI DSI-2 is especially focused on helping system designers enable the high-definition (UHD) video experience for end users, while maximizing battery life and minimizing costs and complexity. The features of the new version allow the screens to work smoothly and efficiently in a variety of use cases, from high-resolution, high-speed video frames (such as 8K at 120 fps) to responsive and low latency user interface. “command modes” and static modes: to improve screen performance with the lowest possible power consumption, ”MIPI Alliance said.

Among these key features, a custom video mode allows device screens to seamlessly switch from highly immersive video operating modes to less intensive command modes for low-frame-frame GUI images. The v2.0 specification also saves energy in other ways. A new feature of the adaptive update panel allows the device’s screen to retain images for varying lengths and lengths without fixed updates from the host processor, saving power without the need for peripheral buffer, MIPI Alliance said.

In a gesture of collaboration with the industry, the group also continues to work with the Video Electronic Standards Association, a group whose rules usually apply to screens of larger devices such as televisions. The v2.0 update includes support for the latest VESA Display Stream Compression (VESA DSC) 1.2b and VESA Display Compression-M (VDC-M) 1.2 codecs. By incorporating both codecs, which provide three to six times data compression, keeping the display without visual loss, DSI-2 offers design options to suit a variety of bandwidth and power requirements, depending on MIPI Alliance.

The DSI-2 v2.0 specification is compatible with all previous versions of the specification.
