Virtual reality and robotics come together to heal

From the NIH grant to primary care and neurorehabilitation

DENTON, Texas, September 21, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Mike Christian, CEO of From The Future, LLC, and Dr. David Brown, Dean of the School of Health Professions at UTMB, is once again working together on the use of virtual reality (VR) to help with physical rehabilitation. Their partnership began in 2017 with a study by the National Institutes of Health. “Dr. Brown is a leader in collaborating with engineering professionals to research and develop products for advancing patient rehabilitation,” he says. “The combined powers of virtual reality and robotics have the potential to profoundly change the face of physical and neurological rehabilitation.”

With significant advances in VR technology since 2017, Dr. Brown tried to do just that Mike Christian to upgrade the previous VR gaming app, called Lucid, to the latest hardware that integrates with the KineAssist MX (KAMX) therapeutic treadmill.

Players wear virtual reality headsets and walk on a KineAssist MX treadmill, which allows patients with physical injuries or chronic pain to walk safely while being supported by a smart robotic arm. Patients meet physiotherapy goals and exercises while cognitively engaging in a virtual world.

Experience KAMX and Lucid VR are installed in two rehabilitation facilities with a third on the way. These facilities are located in the Primary Care Pavilion (PCP) of the UTMB Galveston, Texas and the Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute with a location also in Barcelona Galveston and one in Lubbock, Texas. The use of KAMX by PCP will focus on treating physical problems related to musculoskeletal injuries or disorders involving back, hip, and knee pain. The use of the Moody Center of the robotic tape will be for people with brain injuries who have difficulty walking. In the recent article, “Virtual reality and robotics come together to heal”, Mike Christian states: “Future combined powers of VR and robotics can profoundly change the face of physical and neuro rehabilitation.”
