Fortunately, the work week is over and it’s time to go back a few times, relax and grab a video game controller. Or the mouse. Or a smartphone.
Some of us are a little busy doing other things this weekend, so playing games won’t be an important part of the equation, though, there will be some time to show up in one or two games.
This weekend we will walk through a future Prague, capturing creatures in balls and forcing them to fight, picking up some souls and trying out a second game-creating game.
Alex Donaldson, writing assistant: Sniper Elite VR, Pokemon Unite
My weekend will be mostly devoted to real life stuff (we’re currently doing some house renovations and living on a brutally glorified lot), but I plan to find some time to play here and there.
First, I’ve been experimenting a bit with Sniper Elite VR on my Oculus Quest 2, and it combines with some other real VR experiences to help rekindle my interest in virtual reality. Plus, it’s not news, but going back to Quest 2, it’s really a very nice piece of equipment. Probably the best virtual reality headset available in terms of value and functionality, right? Shame on the links with an evil corporation and all that.
Speaking of bad deeds, I will also force cute animals to fight among themselves Pokémon Unite. And, to follow the evil thread here, I can’t believe how much fun monetization is in this game … but the thing is, the game itself is absolutely beautiful and therefore I find it hard to dislike it too . I never thought a MOBA Pokémon would work, but here we are, and it’s deliciously addictive and surprisingly balanced in mechanical terms, respectful of both the genre and the broader concepts of Pokémon.
As usual, I’m also working on a couple of secret things, playing games I can’t talk about yet. But stay tuned to the site for more information on these.
Dorrani Williams, video producer: Gate of Death, Pokemon Unite
This weekend I will play Door of Death. So far I have only played one or two hours and I can already say that it will be a great match.
It’s a game that reminds me why I love games. None of the photorealistic graphics or complicated game mechanics, it’s just a crow with a sword trying to harvest some souls and that’s all I need right now.
I think Devolver Digital shot in the foot by not releasing Death’s Door on Nintendo Switch as well, but my Switch will be used this weekend with the new MOBA game Pokémon Unite. I’ve never been a big fan of Pokémon, but I’ve been playing MOBA for years, so I thought I’d give it a try. And, to be honest, it’s a lot of fun. I don’t see myself playing it forever, but it’s still a pretty solid game and my Cinderace is a force to be reckoned with, so be careful.
James Billcliffe, Guide Editor – God Ex: Mankind Divided
You’re never supposed to go back to the games you liked in the past, but I’m going to install them again this weekend. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
The problematic, but ultimately underestimated, immersive simulator failed so much that it killed the series, which is to think it’s doubly a shame with cyberpunk back in vogue in such a big way.
Running through the rainy streets of the near future in Prague was a lot of fun in 2016 and I’m interested to see how the PS4 graphics from the Middle Ages are translated into the PC version. What’s more, there’s apparently a lot of DLC that I never knew existed, and that I apparently also grabbed for pennies when I grabbed the game at a (not so) recent sale.
If you need me, I will be sitting in a dark room with a raincoat and mirrors to complete the experience.
Stephany Nunneley, news editor – Pokemon Go (again)
Like last weekend, I have mostly thought about playing Pokémon Go. The Pokemon Go Fest is over, but thanks to the completion of all players taking on global challenges, the first round of Ultra Unlock bonuses is live. By August 3, Dialga will appear in five-star raids and Pokémon from various eras will appear more frequently. Then you have a new batch of Pokémon that appear in both three and star raids, which I appreciate because you can only fight so many Espurr and Wobbuffet before you get a little tired.
The next Ultra Unlock bonus will include Palkia appearing in five-star raids and Alakazam, Kangaskhan and Heracross in three-star raids. I really want an Alakazam for the sole purpose of adding it to my Pokedex, because I don’t have enough candy right now to make it evolve from Kadabra. During this time, red-striped and blue-striped swings will also appear and I don’t have any.
There will also be a third Ultra Unlock bonus, but for now Niantic is not silent. Oh, there’s August Community Day starring Eevee, and I’m really excited about it.
Tom Orry, Editor-in-Chief – Dreams, PS5
I bought Dreams in Early Access, which seems like years and years ago, but they haven’t booted in a long time. The attraction of the new collaborative project of MegaPenguin attracted me again and I really like what is there so far.
Hopefully, the new additions to the community will come at a regular pace, so that the set does not lose momentum and fingers crossed that there will be an element of trying to outdo each other that will lead to some brilliant game cuts.
I also took a look at the Mercedes x Dreams project, which is a weird thing. I find the Xbox-Arcade-era-360 game a bit early, but I played it to the end and I don’t regret giving it a spin.
So that’s what we’re doing this weekend. What plans do you have? Try something new, keep trying to finish your current game, or plan to revisit one of your favorites?
