What is the metaverse? Why does Zuckerberg want to turn Facebook into a metaverse company?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg drew eyeballs earlier this week after telling his employees he was driving his company toward becoming a “metaverse”; a term commonly heard in video games and science fiction movies. According to Zuckerberg, the plan was to change the company to work on building a set of connected social applications and some hardware to support them on a platform that would build a set of maximalist and interconnected experiences known as the “metaverse “.

Several U.S. media portals quoted him as saying, “What I think is most interesting is how these issues will come together into a bigger idea,” Zuckerberg said. “Our overall goal in all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life,” he added.

What is Metaverse?

First heard in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, a metavers literally means a collective virtual shared space that is the sum of all virtual worlds and the Internet. Apart from augmented reality, a metaverse can contain real-world derivatives or copies. So how does Facebook plan to apply this concept of science fiction to real life?

Zuckerberg believes he would be able to build a system where people move between virtual reality (VR), AR, and even 2D devices, using realistic avatars of themselves, if necessary. So, sitting in a cafe, people would be able to boot a workstation with a flick of their finger. A metavers would help people work, socialize, share things, and have other experiences through a convergence of physical, augmented, and virtual reality in an online shared space, which includes games such as Fortnite, Roblox, i even Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been explored to do.

Why does Zuckerberg want to turn Facebook into a metaverse company?

In an interview with Casey Newton of The Vergecast, Zuckerberg detailed his concept of metaverse and how it will help provide a huge opportunity for individual creators and artists who want to work and own homes away from current urban centers or those living in places where education or recreation opportunities are more limited. While virtual reality is an important part of a metaverse, it’s not just virtual reality. Mark Zuckerberg plans to make metaverse accessible on all different computing platforms: VR and AR, PCs, mobile devices, and even game consoles.

In an interview with The Vergecast he says, “A lot of people also think of metaverse as something that is basically games. And I think entertainment will be an important part, but I don’t think this is just a game. I think this is a persistent environment. and synchronous where we can be together, which I think will probably look like a kind of hybrid between the social platforms we see today, but an environment where you are embodied. ”

The tech billionaire aims to start this next chapter for Facebook over the next five years or so. He expects the transition to transition effectively from people who consider the company to be primarily a social media company to a metaverse company.
